January 2016 sees the unemployment rate jump up

The unemployment rate in Australia jumped to 6% in January from the previous year’s rate of 5.8% according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS).

A talent shortage has led to 42 per cent of Australian employers struggling to fill roles despite national unemployment at 6.1 per cent, a survey has found.

Human resource and recruitment company Manpower Group Australia surveyed more than 1500 businesses and found one quarter of Australian companies were not currently implementing any tactics to curb the impact of the talent shortage.

In the annual survey, skilled trades were remained the hardest roles to fill.

This year management and executive positions came in at second hardest role to fill, up from ranked fifth in 2014. Read more

Recent data shows the IT employment sector has continued to strengthen from the past quarter, with an increase in both contracting and permanent vacancies, indicating a strong improving market.

The latest Peoplebank ICT Salary & Employment Index shows contract roles rose by +7% and permanent vacancies were up by +39%  between the second quarter (April to June 2014) and the third quarter (July to September). Read more

Increase in temporary work

An international study conducted by Page Personnel shows Australia now has the second highest percentage of temporary workers anywhere in the world with nearly 4 percent of our total working population employed on a temporary basis. The increase of enterprise bargaining in the workforce, a decline in the proportion of firms with closed union shops and a growth in the use of human resource firms have all been among the factors that have led to a huge increase in the propensity for employers to use temporary labour. This trend is mirrored across the world, according to the study which found three in five of all professionals and one in three employers expected to see a rise in the need for temporary employment in the future.
