Recent data shows the IT employment sector has continued to strengthen from the past quarter, with an increase in both contracting and permanent vacancies, indicating a strong improving market.

The latest Peoplebank ICT Salary & Employment Index shows contract roles rose by +7% and permanent vacancies were up by +39%  between the second quarter (April to June 2014) and the third quarter (July to September). Read more

Increase in temporary work

An international study conducted by Page Personnel shows Australia now has the second highest percentage of temporary workers anywhere in the world with nearly 4 percent of our total working population employed on a temporary basis. The increase of enterprise bargaining in the workforce, a decline in the proportion of firms with closed union shops and a growth in the use of human resource firms have all been among the factors that have led to a huge increase in the propensity for employers to use temporary labour. This trend is mirrored across the world, according to the study which found three in five of all professionals and one in three employers expected to see a rise in the need for temporary employment in the future.

The latest Pulse Survey of Hiring Intentions from the Recruitment and Consulting Services Association (RCSA) shows 61 per cent of responding RCSA members predict an increase in the demand for permanent recruitment services over the next three months. IT Contractors still in demand

With IT seeping into all areas of the business, and working on a project basis, the hiring of IT contractors has become a more popular trend in Australia, the latest edition of Hudson’s Employment Trends report says.

Surveying 2,887 Australian employers about their hiring intentions, the report found that 29.4% of respondents intended to hire contract IT staff, with the intention to hire permanent IT staff falling 3.6% from the last report to 25.2%.  Indicating that IT contractors have more chance of getting a job than someone seeking a permanent tech role.

Australians are the world’s most positive about temporary work

According to a new study by Page Personnel, a global recruitment consultancy firm, employees in Australia have the most positive attitude towards temporary work across the 17 countries it surveyed.

The report is based on more than 13,000 responses from employers and professionals across the world, the Global Insights: How the World Views Temporary Employment and Interim Management.  It revealed  78.6% of professionals in Australia have a positive or very positive attitude towards temporary work.

Employers are generally confident about the value that temporary employment provides.  Positivity is greater in countries with longer practice of temporary employment; such as Australia, the UK and Canada were temporary employment has become accepted as a fact of working life.  Read more
