Gender Pay Gap Still Exists

Australia’s gender pay gap between men and women still remains significant according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS).  The number is as high as 17.5% and has been stuck between 15 and 17% for years. The Workplace Gender Equality Agency says the gender pay gap across all sectors of the Australian economy stands at 17.5%. That’s 2.6 percentage points higher than it was in 2004 and one percentage point higher than it was in 1995.

Summarised Gender Pay Gap data from the ABS include:

  • WA had the widest pay gap at 26%
  • TAS had the lowest pay gap at 8.9%
  • Gap has grown wider in NSW as up 2.2% on previous year
  • In NT the gap has also increased by 1.9%
  • ACT the gap grew by 0.7%
  • The gender pay gap improved in TAS down by 2.9%
  • VIC the gap decreased by 2.3%
  • QLD and WA the gap reduced by 0.5%
  • SA also saw the pay gap improve by 0.4%
